Today, I realize I have had a wonderful and adventurous life and especially I know how important it is to have been able to make a great dream come true, born when I was young, developed over the years and which will go on beyond what is left of my life.
I know the value of hands and their wisdom. The wonder and satisfaction of working wood by hand, shaping and giving life to anonymous pieces of wood and putting them together to create unique objects for everyday use!
I know how beautiful it is to put one’s passions into the fruits of one’s work: my greatest passion of course was the sea and the seaman’s life, and I wanted to transfer this atmosphere to my home and to those of other people, by creating unique handmade furniture in old navy style.
This is why I wake up each morning feeling the joy of going to my carpentry workshop to work together with my trusted assistants.
This is why every time somebody buys a piece of Caroti furniture, I am happy to transmit to them a part of my world and life, made forever immortal in that hand made creation.
In the evening, when my assistants leave their job to go home, there is nothing I enjoy more than cleaning the tools and putting things in order.
It is a moment of peace and quiet, when I can stop to contemplate the fruits of daily work, which patiently and meticulously take shape, day after day, until they become recognisable in a piece of furniture.
Every evening I stop to admire all this, then I go to practice another ritual.
I go down to the little port and sit on the wall to look out at the sea, and count how many sails I can see on the horizon.
“Lorenzo! What are you doing?! Always looking at the sea! Go home, it’s late! The sea is always the same, it never changes!”, an old man from the village riding by on his bicycle scolds me.
But there is one fundamental thing about the sea that they don’t know: it changes all the time, a moment before is never the same as a moment after. And it changes people’s destiny, as it did mine.
So every evening, I and the sea talk to each other silently.
The sea inspires me and I am devoted to it for all this great beauty which surrounds me and contributes every day to generating and nourishing, as does the wind with the waves of the sea.
